The Swiss Customs Service estimates between 30 to 40 million counterfeit and replica watches are put into circulation annually. These counterfeit watches cause considerable damage to the watch industry, both financially due to potential lost sales and also brand degradation as a result of the market being flooded with counterfeit copies of the original watches.

The annual trade show of the watch industry known as BaselWorld attracts many attendees from China who spend their time photographing the latest models being displayed by the top luxury watch-making brands. The photos of these new and prototype watches then find their way back to manufacturers in China where they are quickly copied and made into replica watches. The counterfeit timepieces are then rushed to market, often in advance of the authentic watch.

It is estimated by Swiss Customs that 40% of replica watches originate in China, although counterfeits are also manufactured elsewhere, including the United States. In October of 2006 police in Florida arrested a woman who had been operating a counterfeit watch business that earned about $8 million in sales. It is estimated that counterfeit watch sales worldwide cost Swiss watch manufacturers more than $600 million per year in lost sales. Once these counterfeit watches have been confiscated, it is the obligation of the Swiss Customs Service to destroy them. Surprisingly, in Switzerland individuals are allowed to keep a maximum of one counterfeit watch per person, provided they personally import it into the country. In addition, the watch being imported must not include any forged precious-metal hallmarks.

Two Types of Counterfeit Watches

Counterfeit watches are divided into two groups: The first group is comprised of low-priced imitations of watches. A cheap counterfeit watch features the name of a prestigious brand, but lacks its design and functions. The second group involves counterfeit watches designed to resemble the original authentic watch (a trade-dress violation). Some high-priced counterfeit watches are produced from better quality materials and have golden parts and leather straps.

Replica Rolex Watches

One of the more popular counterfeited watch models are the Rolex replica watches – which are illegally manufactured replicas of authentic Rolex watches. As with many of the expensive brand-name luxury watches on the market, Rolex watches can frequently be found being counterfeited and sold illegally on the internet and the street. The counterfeit Rolex watches are mostly produced in countries that include Taiwan, Korea, India and China (statistics from 2004 show that 54% of counterfeits seized originated in China) and can be found retailing for as little as $5 and as high as $1,000 or more for high-end replicas fabricated in gold, although the majority of counterfeit Rolexes use gold electroplating. The trade in replica Rolex watches has become sophisticated, complete with full-color glossy brochures and catalogues of counterfeited watches produced in China and offered for sale to retail vendors.

Characteristics of a Counterfeit Watch

You often hear that you can tell a counterfeit watch from an authentic one by the smooth movement of the second hand. This is a myth, due to the fact that many counterfeit watches use inexpensive quartz crystal engines which produce the telltale start/stop movement visible once per second of the sweep. If you observe closely you will see that even an authentic Rolex movement does not have a perfectly smooth second-hand sweep, but actually eight movements per second. The only watch mechanisms that had a second-hand with a true, uninterrupted sweep were the Seiko Spring-Drive and the Bulova tuning-fork movement. That being said, some of the better counterfeit watches on the market have automatic movements, and Rolex has produced a few models with quartz movements which produces the distinct quartz movement ticks.

Another trait of a replica Rolex watches is if it has a transparent case back allowing the movement to be seen. Rolex never made such a watch, an exception being some models from the 1930s which are extremely rare and the new Cellini Price models. You will never see an authentic Rolex watch with an engraved company logo, design or Rolex name on the outside of the caseback. Exceptions to this are a few of the lady’s models which have engraving on the case backs, and the Sea-Dweller models which say in black on the back, Rolex Oyster Original Gas Escape Valve, along with two Rolex logos. Other than that, authentic Rolex watches have a smooth caseback free of engravings.

Recently, Rolex has begun shipping recent models with a 3-dimensional hologram-encoded sticker on the caseback that has a floating Rolex crown logo to the top of the watch case’s reference number, which is printed in black. Most of the stickers on counterfeit Rolex watches are either solid green or a repetitious “Rolex” pattern, instead of a hologram. Some of the replica Rolex watches manufactured in Laos, Vietnam and China from 2006 on have a solid green hologram on the caseback. Prior to 2002 the reference number was printed in gold and the hologram did not have the Rolex crown logo. Today, counterfeiters are trying to more closely match the actual hologram sticker. Rolex stopped using the hologram around 2007 and new Rolex watches are not being shipped with it.

Another trait of an authentic Rolex watch is the almost invisible laser-etched crown logo on the inside of the crystal at the 6 o’clock position. A few replica Rolex watches have this etching, but it is often smaller and less distinct than on an authentic Rolex watch.

Also, an authentic Rolex has a date magnification 2.5 times normal size which should almost visibly fill the glass bubble. A few counterfeits have a larger font wheel to imitate the effect, although they don’t come close to appearance of the date on an authentic Rolex watch.

It is always best if you can examine a suspected counterfeit Rolex next to a genuine Rolex watch. Comparing them in this manner often reveals small color variations on the dial and watch-band, the laser printing on the face and any other variances that could identify an authentic Rolex from a counterfeit. In addition, all the edges on an authentic Rolex and its band are smooth, not sharp or coarse like many counterfeits.

Counterfeit watches are sometimes manufactured so well that even a specialist needs special equipment to verify its authenticity, according to Swiss Customs Service officials. An expensive price tag for a watch is also not a guarantee of quality, as even they can simply be very well done counterfeits. In addition, logos, seals and other proprietary markings can be forged to deceive the purchased into believing the watch is made with genuine solid gold, when in reality it’s a counterfeit that’s gold plated. Gold watches do not have to be made of solid gold to be authentic, as there are authentically manufactured watches that are gold plated. Counterfeits that are gold colored use much thinner gold plating, which will quickly begin to wear away.

In the world of the rich and famous, luxury watches, are easy gifts to give. It seems it has become almost customary for celebrities to gift each other high end watches at any point during their relationship, even within the first few months.

Apparently, spending thousands and sometimes tens of thousands of dollars on a watch for a relatively new girlfriend or boyfriend is all good in Hollywood.

The ironic thing is that when rich people date other rich people, there almost seems to be competition in who can buy who what and in one upping each other’s purchases.

For example, John Mayer seems to be the king of buying Rolex watches for his girlfriends, and if I’m not mistaken, the same Rolex. He bought both Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston gold Rolex watches. Mayer gave Jessica Simpson a Rolex Datejust Jubilee Men’s Watch with an Oyster Bracelet. When he dated Jennifer (the entire relationship lasted only four months!) he gave her a Ladies Oyster Datejust with black face and pink hour markers. The one girlfriend who came previous to these two but who walked with nothing was Cameron Diaz.

In her case, Cameron is quite capable of buying herself a Rolex or any other kind of women’s luxury watch, or jewelry watch. So is Aniston. In fact, she seems to have a weakness for Cartier watches. She has been seen wearing a Cartier Tank Louis, a Cartier Tank Chinoise, and a Cartier Roadster, among other vintage Cartier watches.

This past summer the gossip mill started again that because Jen was seen wearing the Rolex Mayer had given her, it meant she was trying to send him messages that she wanted to rekindle their romance. Fat chance. If a girl is given a nice watch or ring or handbag, she should be able to enjoy it as long as the memories of the ex don’t ruin the moment.

Due to their large cash flow, stars like Aniston would never need to sell an item such as a luxury watch. However, Jessica Simpson, whose career (not to mention personal life) is struggling, may want to think about parting with the Rolex from Mayer; she could probably get more for it being that Mayer gave it to her. Hey, did Tony Romo give her anything?

Another recent female celebrity to give a luxury men’s watch to her man is Khloe Kardashian. After only months of dating, Khloe and Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom married. Right after the wedding, Lamar turned 30 and Khloe gave him a solid gold Breitling watch for his birthday. She says “he is a watch collector, so he was beyond happy.” While most Breitlings do not cost as much as a Rolex, they can and while it was not reported how much the watch was valued at, Breitlings can range in price from $2,000 to more than $100,000. Among the jet set crowd of Hollywood, Breitling watches have become quite the status symbol. Made for aviation pilots, these watches come with a high number of complications and unique movements; two factors which influence the price of a watch. Not to mention that they are made from precious metals. However, unlike Rolexes, Cartier watches, Breitling watches are not typically jewelry watches – the kind that are decked out in lots of bling.

Although there are other types of watches bought and worn by celebrities, like Omega watches, TAG Heuer and Bvlgari watches, these do not seem to be the preferred brand that one celeb may buy for another. In that case, Rolex takes the cake.

If you ever get the chance to date a celebrity or anybody rich for that matter, make sure to get your watch, but be unique and go for something less common. Ideas include: Panerai, Audemars Piguet, Chopard, Gucci watches, etc. Ca-ching!

MANUAL WIND WATCHES:

Collectors find these kind of watches attractive, even though they are manual wind watches, which means that the user has to wind it every one or two days by the crown in order to work. Once the wearer winds the crown the watch will keep a power reserve in the mechanism that will keep the watch running until the next winding. Perhaps these timepieces are desirable because it could be said that it is the classic way to read the time, since they were the first type of movement. They are still produced in Switzerland by fine watch producers such as Jaeger-Lecoultre and Franck Muller and can even cost over $500,000 when they come accompanied by complications. Some exclusive models can reserve up to 18 days of power and will usually have power-reserve indicator on the face.

AUTOMATIC WATCHES:

They are called automatic or self-winding because the wearer does not need to wind the watch to generate power, the watch winds itself automatically once a person moves the wrist. The arm motion causes the rotor, a metal weight attached to a winding mechanism, to rotate back and forth in a circular motion to wind the mainspring, a flat coiled spring that powers mechanical watches.

QUARTZ WATCHES:

These type of watches do not need much maintenance, only a change of battery every other year. These watches are only powered by a battery. However there is a special kind of quartz watch that could be called a hybrid, a mix of automatic and quartz. In other words the watch comes with an electrical generator that is charged by the movement of wearer’s wrist . These watches are sold by Japanese or Swiss companies such as Seiko, Tissot , and Omega under model names called “Kinetic”, “Autoquartz”or “Omegamatic . The third type of Quartz watch get their power from the sun. These solar watches have solar cells located on the dial that charge the watch mechanism. The most popular of these solar watches is without doubt the Citizen “Eco-Drive”.

What’s amazing about the Timex Triathlon Ironman Watch is not only that so many people are using it, (not much of a stretch, given Timex’s reputation as a reliable sports watch that works), but who is wearing it.

For the Timex Triathlon Ironman Watch graces the wrists of doctors, celebrities, lawyers and business leaders – even astronauts have been seen donning the famous timepiece…

It may surprise you to know the even former U.S. President Bill Clinton was seen wearing a Timex Ironman to his inauguration.

So why did Bill Clinton choose the Timex Triathlon Ironman Watch over a Patek Philippe or a Rolex?

While the Timex Triathlon Ironman Watch may be relatively inexpensive – a fact proven by it’s incredible popularity, the watch has never been considered “cheap.”

Timex is seen as a reliable, value-based brand as opposed to a cheap brand and has always had a pretty good reputation demographically.

Nevertheless, President Clinton is not this watch’s first presidential appointment. Although the Ironman Triathlon watch was designed to accommodate the needs of hard-core triathletes and runners, it has proven a winner inside the Beltway, most notably on the wrists of the former presidential team of George Bush and Dan Quayle.

Clinton also owned and wore several early models (including the original) during his time as Governor of Arkansas and in the early years of his Presidency. Clinton has donated one of his earlier Ironmans, along with Hillary’s inaugural ball gown and Chelsea’s ballet slippers, to the Smithsonian Institute.

My family has been collecting watches for more than 2 generations. Since I was young, my grandfather would often let me go through his watch collections (with constant supervision of course). Among his many watches, Rolex watches always seem to capture my attention. Many of them have their distinctive stainless tell straps and an unmistakable logo of a crown in the center. For me, Rolex watches have always been one of the most distinguished among other luxury watch brands.

In the past hundred years, Rolex has gone from producing classic watches to creating new line of ostentatious luxury timepieces. Many of the watches produced by Rolex today are so heavily adorned with gold and glaring precious tones. Some of the watches are just so over the top that it just looks (in my humble opinion) cheap and tacky!

Thankfully, despite Rolex’s effort to expand their range, it has retained its line of classical watches. One of my all time favorites is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Men’s Watch (16200-BLSO). At 3.6 centimeters across, it is a midsize men’s watch that is designed to blend in with both casual and formal outfits.

It has a matte stainless steel casing and a distinctive navy blue dial. The numbers on the dial are indicated by small white strips, which make it very easy to tell the time under poor lighting conditions. Like many classical models, it has a date display at the 3 o’clock position and a magnifying glass right on top to magnify the date. The dates are in bright red numbers, just like how they use to make it in the 50′s. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Men’s Watch 116200-BLSO is the epitome of classical luxury watches. It has a sort of retro feel embedded into is timeless design that I find simply irresistible!

Before I started collecting Rolex and other luxury watches, I was buying $400 – $500 watches nearly every month. These watches, although pretty, never seems to last and almost all of them have very little resale value. After a little advice from my father (a Rolex enthusiasts) I started collecting Rolex watches.

The first Rolex watch that I bought (about 6 years ago) was the Rolex GMT-Master II 16710BLKBLK men’s watch. It has a nice stainless steel strap with a black bezel and dial. As this watch can be easily matched with any outfit, I was wearing it for almost every day for the past 6 years. It has also outlasted several of my cheaper watches.

Later I found out there was a two toned version of the watch that I bought, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT Master II 116713-BSO. The 116713-BSO has the exact design as the 16710 except that it is highlighted by 18k gold. The outline of the bezel, numbers, center of the strap and the turning dial is adorned with gold giving it a distinctive look.

I wasted no time in getting myself one of these as above all the practicalities; it stands out more than the 16710 and just seems more luxurious and expensive (which it actually is). It retains the black dial that makes it very easy to read the time even under dark or glaring conditions. Like almost all Rolex watches, the dial window is made of scratch resistant synthetic sapphire. It is also water resistant for up to 100 feet. If you are planning to get yourself this little piece of luxury, do only buy from authorized dealers. My friend owns a replica and honestly, I could not tell them apart!

A Self- Winding or Automatic Watch charges itself with the normal movement of your body. The process consists of the rotor, moving back and forth every time the user moves the arm or wrist. The rotor’s pendular movement winds the mainspring, a flat coiled spring that powers mechanical watches. For that reason it is called a self-winding or automatic watch. In simple words it means that the user does not need to manually wind the watch with the crown. It is also important to consider that automatic watches will keep a power reserve usually from 24 hours to 72 hours, however there are some watches that hold more than 200 hours of power reserve. This feature favors some users who have the habit of taking the watch off the wrist for less than 24 hours , not having to reset the time eatch time they take it off. Since the first automatic watch was created in 1770 by Abraham-Louis Perrelet, automatic movements are very popular among Swiss Watch Manufacturers. There are some recommendations when it comes taking care of your automatic watch:
It is a good practice to wind your watch once every two weeks if you do not wear your watch regularly. This will ensure that all parts are well lubricated. If you have not worn the watch for more than a day it is better to manually wind it before wearing it. You should wind the crown until you find some resistance. It is usually enough to wind it about 4,5 turns on most of the watches. Please keep in mind that some watches such as Breitling you will not find resistance when winding it but it is still advisable to wind it around 4 or 5 turns.
It is imperative that you do not set the day or date near midnight since it will disrupt the mechanism. It is not recommended to wear the watch when playing high impact sports that require constant arm movement such as tennis. Service your watch once every two years for proper lubrication.

With these tips you should have your watch running and keeping accurate time!

First Things First: What strap will suit you?

Activities: Ask yourself, are you an active/sporty person, sweat a lot, need a flexible and tough watch band or do you need a watch which will complement your outfit?

How you use your swatch watch will determine what type of watch strap you should buy. Do not just buy straps based on the design and color but consider what, when and how you use your watch will be a crucial point in making that choice.

Secondly: What strap suit your watch?

This sounds like a silly question but it’s really very important that your sporty watch don’t get match with an elegant strap while your loud, color Swatch gets paired with a plain old leather strap.

Thirdly: Shall I buy the same strap I had been wearing before?

Yes, should you? You may go for this option almost immediately because it just seems right and logical to buy back the original strap (if you can find them) as it suits your watch well.

But you may prefer variety. Time for a change!

Another good reason for buying back the same strap is value. Consider someday you may want to sell off the Swatch watch. Do you know that having the original/same type of straps makes the value of your watch go up higher especially for potential collectors?

How many types of Swatch Watch Straps/Bands are there?

Basically, most of us think that there are three types of Swatch straps:

One: plastic
Two: leather
Three: Metal

Really? You would be surprised by the variety there is. Over at Squiggly website (a very good source for your swatch watches) there is a section for strap search.

Let’s take an example of one tiny section labeled under Standard Gents.

Under this category you find ‘standard’ plastic straps

- ‘standard’ leather straps

- flex straps (elastic, metal straps. Comes in many colors and 2 sizes)

- flip lock strap (usually made of metal. Used mainly with Swatch Irony watches)

- elastic pop straps (only used for pop swatches)

- other straps

Woah. You may be thinking now “I should not have read this article it just confuses me more!” You maybe right there. Buying is most enjoyable relying on intuition and emotion rather than reason and rationality. However, if you find yourself in need or just curious and need more resources you can go to these sites (by no means comprehensive) below.
